Why Not Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
A unique viewpoint, from the Editorial Team of The Vashon Loop, as to what we value most and why AI has no place in our community paper.
March 4th, 2023
Dear Vashon Loop Readers,
The world is awash in complicated issues, and new tech is a source of many of these hurdles we face. When faced with such a challenge, it always feels best to dive in, dig around, muck about and come up with a theory, an idea, a possible solution and a plan. This helps relieve latent anxiety or uncertainty, which is great (!) so long as we always remember that one day, we may learn more and change our minds. This blend of engagement and humility is a recipe for an effective and flexible life, which is useful when one lives with “humans on Earth.”

Starting with this issue, The Vashon Loop has updated its editorial policies to clarify that AI-generated art and writing are not eligible for publication in the paper or on the web site.
I felt like I should explain my reasons for proposing this new policy, and why I’m pleased it has been adopted. Why do I want The Loop to be “By humans, for humans?”
